Tinkered

Note: These ideas have appeared on the blog before, but have been reworked a bit for the current project. That’s a good thing, as a slightly different view gives us a new perspective and understanding. Or so I hear.  Humans struggle with time and scale. As a member of the species I feel qualified to say as much. Regardless of what we know to be true or probable, our primary concern is not for tomorrow, it’s for today. This is not necessarily intentional or inevitable, but rather a strong biological disposition. We let go of the bird in hand because we see that there are two in the bush. We are desensitized and numbed by news stories reporting the latest spike in disease incidence…

Get in the tank

Most people get a little nervous when you mention something like sensory deprivation. I can understand why. It’s hard not to envision an experimental psychological experiment, or perhaps to associate the experience with an imagined solitary confinement cell at your local penitentiary. Tell people that you’re thinking about trying it out and you’ll get a predictable reply, something along the lines of, “You’re going to do what?!” My nerves were settled walking through the spa door, although the complete novelty of the visit did have my attention at a peak. The first voice came immediately from the young receptionist behind the counter. She was fairly young, visibly tattooed, fully dread-locked and otherwise proudly displaying a bit of hippie crunch around her edges. “Hey, you…

Your inner Guru

Chris Moore

If you can read this then you are alive. Congratulations! I hope you stay that way for years to come. But that is going to take supplies. You’re going to need some essential stuff, like air, water, food and shelter. This shouldn’t come as a surprise. But having a pulse alone isn’t enough. There are no upright, warm-bodied humans who are happy with just being alive. We also require a reason to be alive. We need goals to pursue. We need a big mix of challenges, disappointments and accomplishments. We need to be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and be happy with what we’ve done, who we are, and where we’re going. I think you’ll agree with me on that point,…

Forest for the trees

I think the paleo diet is amazing. The very idea is intuitive. The food selection is tremendous. And, the approach yields rapid and sustained health benefits. What more could you ask for? Well, I would ask for the whole movement to become far less silly. Here’s my grievance. My ground gear, so to speak. Eating a wide array of vegetation and animals which have not been tortured or genetically engineered should not be referred to as the latest diet fad or craze. Instead, I would refer to this as the act of eating food! I see no need for Whole Foods sponsored magazines on the topic…or $50.00 e-books…or weekend Paleo retreats that cost thousands of dollars to attend. We don’t need any more gurus…

Of Meat and Reverence

Chris Moore

You really should think about eating more protein…Or less. Well, I suppose it all just depends. Haven’t you heard? Meat is murder. Meat is life. Are you are carnivore? An omnivore with a dilemma? Maybe you’re thinking about turning vegetarian or militant vegan. For crissakes, anything but veganism! So what will it be? Who should you believe? As with all matters nutrition, fitness, or spirituality, my opinion is that you start by looking within. In this case, you start with inspecting your very own flesh and bone. How about a little science? Ok, here we go. In 2004, Hansell Stedman and his colleagues published a very interesting study. Those results have a little something to do with the question at hand. I want you…
