Tinkered

Chris Moore

Posted on April 3rd, 2013

Note: These ideas have appeared on the blog before, but have been reworked a bit for the current project. That’s a good thing, as a slightly different view gives us a new perspective and understanding. Or so I hear.  Humans struggle with time and scale. As a member of the species I feel qualified to say as much. Regardless of what we know to be true or probable, our primary concern is not for tomorrow, it’s for today. This is not necessarily intentional or inevitable, but rather a strong biological disposition. We let go of the bird in hand because we see that there are two in the bush. We are desensitized and numbed by news stories reporting the latest spike in disease incidence…

Now You’re Cooking

Chris Moore

Posted on May 4th, 2012

I love shows about food. I suppose it started when I was a child. I passed many summer mornings joyfully watching Julia Child and Graham Kerr with my father. These were my favorite Chef’s. I can also remember a very young and very red-headed Bobby Flay cooking clumsily on his first PBS show, at least as I recall it, seemingly light years away from Kitchen Stadium and Iron Chef America. It all paid off for that guy. Today, I really just care about one show in particular…No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain. It is the single greatest showcase of food, culture, and vice that you’re going to find on television. I’m not sure how I can communicate just how much I love it. The stories.…

Is it really that obvious?

Chris Moore

I’m not much of an outdoorsman. Sure, fishing is fun, but I tend to limit these excursions to once or twice every few years. And hunting? Well, if I’ve ever been on such a trip I have no memory of it. But I would likely enjoy the novelty of it all. And who knows, perhaps I harbor an immense, insatiable blood thirst that is yet undisclosed to me. Hey, it’s possible! Ok, fine, it’s more likely that I’m just far too domesticated. But I can certainly appreciate the lure and romanticism of the hunt. There’s the pre-dawn preparatory routine – rising early in the pitch-perfect darkness, packing all necessary supplies (including a year’s supply of beef-jerky and Chex-mix), and then setting forth into, hopefully,…

The Resolution

Chris Moore

Posted on December 28th, 2011

The odd thing about getting older is that things don’t really change. I feel the same way that I’ve always felt. I still laugh at inappropriate jokes. My imagination runs wild every minute of the day, just like it did when I was a child. I’m pretty much just who I’ve always been, albeit a bit wiser and worn around the edges. But one thing is absolutely true. With age, the passage of time begins to accelerate. Time itself seems to grow into our most precious resource. Perhaps you’ve noticed? So here we are again. Another year has come and gone, and I find myself taking stock of everything I was able to accomplish this time around. All of the failures. The things left…

Of Meat and Reverence

Chris Moore

Posted on December 13th, 2011

You really should think about eating more protein…Or less. Well, I suppose it all just depends. Haven’t you heard? Meat is murder. Meat is life. Are you are carnivore? An omnivore with a dilemma? Maybe you’re thinking about turning vegetarian or militant vegan. For crissakes, anything but veganism! So what will it be? Who should you believe? As with all matters nutrition, fitness, or spirituality, my opinion is that you start by looking within. In this case, you start with inspecting your very own flesh and bone. How about a little science? Ok, here we go. In 2004, Hansell Stedman and his colleagues published a very interesting study. Those results have a little something to do with the question at hand. I want you…
