Enter the muse

Chris Moore

Posted on April 30th, 2013

The other night I was having a bit of a rough time. A stack of filled pages waited patiently on my desk to be edited. A fresh blank one stared back at me from my computer screen, that little cursor blinking none-stop like a ticking watch. This is how it goes sometimes. The fire will not light, so you just keep starting at that wood, tossing matches. You might have some very romantic ideas about writing, art or whatever, but let me say that this sort of scene is not uncommon. Listening for the muse can be a bit like waiting at the bus stop. Some days you catch it right at the moment you show up with your lunch box. Other times, it…

Everything in a Tattoo

I recently had the opportunity to catch up with a few high school friends over a holiday lunch. These sorts of meetings are always fascinating. Much of my attention was spent on the analysis, comparing and contrasting our present and former selves. I’m certainly a fan of my digital world and the social media that comes along with it. However, these sorts of meaningful and tactile reunions are just not possible via Facebook chat. Yes. From time to time, the body must actually be present. Topics of our conversation drifted between kids, work, travel…our career aspirations a decade into our big boy, grown-up lives…basically all the big things worth talking about. Dave and Bobby had seen quite a bit of success in sales and…

Be an Artist

There are a lot of people out there who are terribly mistaken. It’s a common trap to fall into. You see a successful business man. Someone with a popular blog or Twitter feed. It’s easy to say to yourself, “Hey, why not me? I’ve got ideas.” The truth is that this world is filled with aspiring Chef’s, Photographers, Painters, Writers, Coaches, Athletes, spiritual Guru’s…you name it. It’s also true that most of these people are Poseurs.  I refer you to the Urban Dictionary: Main Entry: po·seur Pronunciation: pO-’z&r Function: noun Etymology: French Date: 1872 : a person who pretends to be what he or she is not : an affected or insincere person Most people start with their goal in mind. This is a…

It’s Sh*t!

A few years ago I was wandering through my local bookstore. This is a favorite past-time of mine. I think everyone has the same procedure. You grab a coffee, select a few obscure books that may be of interest, and then pick a seat in the cafe. Next, you initiate the modern social display, randomly flipping through the pages as you sip the double mocha caramel frappalatte and make yourself seem as intelligent and appealing as possible to other aspiring pseudo-intellectuals. Hey, it’s fun. I’m right there with you. My local store is just like any other. You have to pass through a few book displays before getting back into the main sections. This where they keep the latest celebrity chef memoir, mad political…

Training Wisdom From Uncle Henry

Chris Moore

Posted on September 21st, 2011

“Keep your blood clean, your body lean, and your mind sharp.” – Henry Rollins What I think and believe is always changing. That’s a good thing. Maybe even essential. If you ask for my opinion, I will be quick to give it to you. But, my mind may be changed tomorrow. Buy then I will have locked on to the next impulse scurrying across my attention deprived mind. A new wave of thoughts sparked by that new quote I read, the new song I heard, the new author I discovered, or the new coffee blend I bought at the Fresh Market…And why should it be any different? Happiness, after all, is just that little tingle you feel deep in your bones after finding that…
