Sometimes you find great advice in the most unexpected places. During a routine evening of whinding down the hours on the internet, I came across the following quote. “Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth.” – Mike Tyson Now, on its face, it’s easy to disregard this as just another crazy statement from an all around crazy guy. But there’s actually a brilliant training lesson here. When it comes to training discussions, I typically hear a few recurring threads. “How often? How long? How many sets and reps? Why are you here?

We all live busy lives. Sometimes it’s hard to know what the priority is. It can be difficult some days to step back into the gym to train – and to do so with purpose. But we do it. Here I am, fresh from a day’s work. I sit. I tie my shoes. I shake it off. “What did I come here to do? What is my goal?” The answer I give now is much different than in the past.

Skepticism in Training

I am a powerlifter. One of my great passions in life is spending time in the gym lifting heavy weights. To this day, I cannot think of anything more satisfying than setting a hard earned personal record. Well, let’s just say there are very few things that are more satisfying. I’m not alone, of course. It really does not matter whether you compete in powerlifting, weightlifting, or strongman competitions.
